Yet another winter storm packing up to 8 inches of snowfall appears set to strike Saturday, adding onto what is already the fifth snowiest season on record, weather experts said.

This latest storm, now developing over Kentucky, will move into the area quickly Saturday, dropping light to moderate snowfall from about 1 p.m. to  7 p.m., National Weather Service meteorologist Lauren Nash said.

Wind gusts could reach up to 35 mph during the storm, forecasts show.

A winter weather watch is in effect for the East End during that time, she said.

The winter weather is projected to add between 3 to 5 inches of snow to an already snow-weary North Fork, with up to 8 inches of snow possible for locations farther east.

This latest batch of snow would add onto the 52.5 recorded inches of snow this year from the NWS’s recording station in Islip. That total is already the fifth-highest since record-keeping began in 1984, 21 inches short of the record set in 1996, Ms. Nash said.

Another cold front is expected to bring more precipitation Monday night through Tuesday, though that storm appears less severe.

“The only question is how much snow versus how much rain [we will see],” she said.
