Greenport Village Board to vote on animal waste law
Greenport Village Board members are expected to vote Monday on a new law regulating pet waste, Mayor David Nyce said during last Tuesday’s work session.
The proposed law seeks to reduce nitrogen loading by requiring people to pick up after their pets while walking them on village-owned land, according to village officials. The new law would also help the village meet new state MS4 water quality standards that are expected to kick in within the next couple of years.
No one commented on the proposed code changed during the board’s public hearing last month.
In June 2012, Southold Town adopted a similar law regulating pet waste, which included all animals considered as domestic pets, such as cats, horses, swine, donkeys and goats. Under Southold Town’s law, violators face a fine of up to $250 for each offense.
The vote is scheduled during the village’s 6 p.m. meeting tonight at the Third Street fire station.
