Cops: Driver crashes car while putting out cigarette

A vehicle crashed into a fire hydrant and utility pole and flipped over on Route 25 in Greenport early Friday, according to a Southold Town police statement.

The driver and passenger inside were not seriously hurt, police said.

The accident occurred just after midnight, when the 24-year-old driver was putting out a cigarette and lost sight of the road, police said. The vehicle crashed in front of Goldsmith’s Boat Shop and both Southold and Greenport Fire Departments were called to the scene, police said.

The driver and a 47-year-old passenger were both taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital with “minor injuries,” according to the police statement.

No arrests were made, police said.
