Century-old bridge in East Marion to be replaced
Residents of Bay Avenue in East Marion can expect a new bridge later this year.
The Town Board approved $8,500 toward replacing the Bay Avenue Bridge, which has suffered damage over the years and further deteriorated in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, Councilwoman Jill Doherty said.
The bridge, built in the early 1900s, has received only spot repairs over the past several decades, according to town engineer Jamie Richter. Although the condition of the century-old bridge continued to decline faster after Sandy, the project is not eligible for FEMA reimbursement, he said.
The Town is now in the process of applying for state Department of Conservation permits for the construction. Work is expected to begin after Labor Day as to not inconvenience summer residents.
