Five days after the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office confirmed it had launched an investigation into the theft of money from the Southold Town Justice Court, the Town Board accepted the resignation of its Senior Court Clerk Tuesday evening.

Longtime clerk Christine Stulsky’s resignation is effective as of March 19, according to the Town Board agenda.

A law enforcement source said last week the subject of the investigation is a Town Justice clerk who had been dealing with the court’s revenue streams for years.

The source said the missing funds amounted to “a substantial number.”

No arrest has been made.

Suffolk County District Attorney spokesman Bob Clifford declined to identify the subject of the investigation Tuesday, saying only: “To date the investigation has covered the previous four years and the DA has decided to expand the investigation in terms of looking further back to establish over what period of time these thefts occurred. What our investigative auditors find in terms of theft would relate of course to the criminal charges the suspect will face.”
