Plan set to remove invasive plant at Soundview Dunes Park

An initiative is underway to eradicate invasive plant species at Soundview Dunes Park in Peconic.

The Southold planning department wants to remove phragmites from a five-acre section of the Soundview Avenue property. The hope is to begin work on the three-year project this fall, planner Mark Terry said.

The town is expected to issue a request for bids on the project within the next two weeks. The cost of the cleanup won’t be clear until the town receives responses. At that point, the Town Board could either accept a bid or reject the project entirely.

Southold Town and Suffolk County jointly acquired Soundview Dunes Park in 2008. The 58-acre parcel, overlooking Long Island Sound east of Goldsmith Inlet, was opened as a public park with hiking trails in the fall of 2011.
