Neighborhood News: Southold student gives teacher a new look

Lots to cover this week, so I’ll start with belated birthday wishes: Savannah Alexander turned 10 March 25, Melissa Grzegorczyk turned 10 March 29 and Brendan Mullen turned 9 March 31. Frank Savits and Virginia Rubin celebrate birthdays April 3.

Danielle Pagano, a Southold High School senior and BOCES cosmetology student, gave her teacher Pam Foote a new look by cutting Ms. Foote’s hair, which was donated to Locks of Love. What a wonderful collaboration!

Charlie Chilton, son of Ed and Kim Chilton, spent his spring break volunteering in New Orleans as a member of the Mission: I’m Home student organization. This organization is helping to rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Well done, Charlie!

Ann Romeo of Southold was recently honored with an Administrator Service Award for Excellence from SCOPE Education Services. Ann is assistant superintendent for business at Little Flower UFSD, Wading River. A dozen family members and colleagues were there to support her at the awards dinner.

An ‘International Night’ recently hosted by the Southold High School Interact Club was an opportunity for students; Rotary Club representatives Linda and Tom Kerr and Pamela Einstman; Rotary Club of Southold members and their president, Margaret Zarcone; and Interact Club adviser Ginny Gilmore to enjoy international foods and hear stories from youth exchange students from Bolivia, Argentina, Brazil and Denmark. The Southold PTA needs volunteers to serve on its executive board for 2014-15. If the positions aren’t filled by June 1, the PTA will be disbanded and all its money spent. This organization helps every child so please consider volunteering. Contact Jen at [email protected].

The Southold Mothers’ Club will host “Bagels with the Bunny” Saturday, April 12, 9-11 a.m. at the Peconic Recreation Center. Bring your camera!

Southold Free Library’s seed exchange program is underway. Gardening books and magazines are on display near a small basket with seed packets you might wish to take. But if you take a little, give a little back. Bring in your clean harvested seeds to keep the supply growing.

Paul Burns recently donated a charming, cheerful oversize rug to the library children’s room in honor of his late wife, Judith, who loves kids, books and libraries.

Discount tickets to the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center in Riverhead are available at the library circulation desk for $16.50 each. They include admission to the aquarium, the butterfly exhibit and the exotic bird aviary.

Chick’s Southold Agway has donated the latest Friends of the Library raffle prize: a basket full of products for the ultimate gardening experience! Chances are $1 each and the drawing is Tuesday, April 15. To donate a prize for these raffles, which have been ongoing for over 20 years, call 765-2077.

Check out the poetry gallery in the library community room during April, National Poetry Month. You can also meet local poets at a reception Saturday, April 12, from 2 to 4 p.m.

School Superintendent David Gamberg will speak Thursday, April 10, at 11 a.m. at the Southold-Peconic Seniors meeting at the recreation center. All are welcome.

Reminder: CAST will hold a local food drive Saturday, April 12. Please donate what you can.
