Board holds off on deer questionnaire
Board members decided to put the brakes on a questionnaire to measure residents’ opinions on issues concerning deer in Southold Town.
Because of the town’s controversial participation in a federal deer cull, the board chose Tuesday to hold off on mailing the survey. Board members agreed to reconsider sending out the poll this fall, once the contention surrounding the sharpshooting program has faded.
Board members had said the survey was inspired by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish & Wildlife Division’s survey, “Living with Deer In NJ.” The poll would ask residents about hunting, Lyme disease, deer-related car accidents and seek input about deer management in Southold.
