A 23-year-old Mattituck man faces an assault charge after he allegedly beat a Laurel woman until she was unconscious outside a Mattituck bar early Sunday, Southold Town police said.
Police responded to reports of a fight at the Broken Down Valise about 2:50 a.m. and found a 31-year-old woman lying on the ground unconscious, according to a police report.
Two of the victim’s friends said a man — identified by police as Nicholas Kito — had come to the bar “highly intoxicated” and was starting fights with people. The friends told police Mr. Kito was asked to leave the bar and that he went outside.
When the two women went outside to check on a friend, they saw Mr. Kito “on top of [the victim], punching her in the face,” according to a police report.
A Mattituck Fire Department medical team tended to the victim and took her to Peconic Bay Medical Center for additional treatment. Mr. Kito was arrested outside the bar and taken to police headquarters.
Mr. Kito was arraigned in Southold Town court and released on $300 bail, authorities said. He is due back in court on May 2, a town court clerk said.
