TUCKERS 14, MONARCHS 4

This high school baseball season has been a big hit for Mattituck, and for good reason, too. The Tuckers are hitting the proverbial cover off the ball.

Bountiful offensive production goes a long way toward explaining the Tuckers’ first-place standing in Suffolk County League VIII. So imagine the stir it caused when the league’s last-place team, Bishop McGann-Mercy, led through the first half of Monday’s game.

The Tuckers might have figured that sooner or later their bats would compensate for some early-game mistakes and their time would come.

It did. In the fourth inning and then again in the fifth.

The Tuckers scored 12 runs in those two innings as they pulled away to their fifth straight win, a 14-4 rout at Mattituck High School.

By the time all the damage was done, the Tuckers (9-1, 8-1) had delivered 12 hits. Marcos Perivolaris, Cameron Burt and Brian Pelan drove in three runs each. Pelan produced three hits: a single, a run-scoring triple and then a two-run double as part of a seven-run rally in the fifth.

Seven Tuckers mustered at least one hit, including Ian Nish, who rapped a two-run double that put the Tuckers ahead, 5-4, in the fourth.

Meanwhile, Burt (4-0) turned in a quality pitching performance, allowing two hits and two earned runs over five innings. The right-hander registered eight strikeouts before being relieved by James Nish, who retired all six batters he faced.

McGann-Mercy’s two hits came on a run-scoring single leveled by Leo Ellis and Marco Pascale’s hard-hit, bad-hop single over lunging third baseman Will Gildersleeve.

It was the sixth straight loss for the Monarchs (1-7, 1-6).
