Ruth Naomi Honig

Longtime Southold resident Ruth Naomi Honig died May 11 in Virginia Beach, Va., after a brief illness. She was 86. 

Ms. Honig was the second child of Elsie and Marcus Quarum, born in Grand Forks, N.D., and raised in Fergus Falls, Minn. After receiving her nursing degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., she worked as the head nurse of the neurology unit at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, where she met her future husband, Dr. Klaas P. Honig.

After relocating to Southold in 1970, Ms. Honig worked as her husband’s office manager and nurse until their retirement. Family members said she was a devoted wife and enjoyed reading, opera, keeping up on current events, spoiling her grandchildren, and volunteering at the Southold Book Cottage. She was a member of Southold Garden Club and Southold Yacht Club. She moved to Virginia Beach two years ago, where she was an active member of garden and book clubs.

Ms. Honig was predeceased by her husband in 2011. She is survived by her children, Dr. Peter Honig of Philadelphia, Pa., Dr. Mark Honig of Virginia Beach, and Janna Torelli of Wayzata, Minn.; and seven grandchildren.

Ms. Honig will be buried with her husband in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Tarrytown, N.Y.
