Have you recently welcomed a furry little addition into your home?

Though they may just babies themselves, kittens as young as four months and puppies as young as five months are old enough to get pregnant.

Kent Animal Shelter of Calverton has teamed up with PetSmart Charities to introduce the “Precious, Not Parents” campaign, offering low-cost spay or neuter surgeries throughout the month of June.

For just $20 owners can protect their puppy or kitten — who is 6 months old or younger — with a spay or neuter procedure.

While some people may think their pets are too young to be fixed, spaying and neutering is safe for kittens and puppies as young as eight to 10 weeks old, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

“These precious babies shouldn’t be parents at five and six months old,” said Pamela Green, executive director of Kent Animal Shelter.

To take advantage of the offer, mention the “Precious, Not Parents” campaign when scheduling an appointment. The campaign is based on availability and funding from PetSmart will allow for 210 surgeries in all.
