Fresh off a two-week break, the county champion Mattituck baseball team returns to action this afternoon to face the Nassau County champion for the Long Island crown.

The Tuckers will face Wheatley at 4 p.m. at Farmingdale State College (map).

The Tuckers earned a spot in today’s championship by winning the decisive third game of a series against Center Moriches, 1-0, May 23. It was Mattituck’s fourth county title in 12 years.

Mattituck has posted a 20-3 record this season and was ranked sixth in the state for Class B in the most recent state rankings. Wheatley was ranked ninth. Wheatley dominated Oyster Bay in the Nassau final, winning the three-game series in two games, 17-5 and 13-0.

The winner of today’s game gets right back to the diamond Saturday. The winner advances to play either Rye Neck or Spackenhill at a field to be determined based on the winner of that game. The game will either be at Mamaroneck High School at 2 p.m. or Cantine Memorial Field in Saugerties at a time to be determined.

Mattituck is vying for its third Long Island crown and first since 2011.
