James G. Burgio

Former Laurel resident James G. Burgio of Greensboro, N.C. died May 25. He was 95. 

Jim was a graduate of Fordham University and a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. during world War II, training pilots to fly in combat. After the Marine Corps he was an airline pilot with Eastern Airlines for 30 years until his retirement. He captained the Tri-Star L 1011 whisper liner for his last years and had an impeccable reputation for safety.

Jim lived most of his adult life between the North Fork and Florida spending about six months in each, taking advantage of the best that both had to offer. He loved his wife and his children, eating out with friends, travelling, dancing and life at the beach.

Jim was predeceased by his wife, Josephine in 2004 and is survived by his three sons and their spouses, Jim and Lynn, Robert and Bonnie, and Rick; his sister, Gilda; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Interment will take place Monday, July 14, at 11:30 a.m. at Calverton National Cemetery followed by a celebration of life and lunch at the family home in Laurel.
