Southold News: Awards for student journalists

The Summer 2013 issue of The Sentinel, Southold High School’s student newspaper.

School is out and summer is here. What a wonderful time of year! I’ve lived here in Southold for most of my life and have not played tourist in many years. I’d love to hear from you, the readers, about the best places to go on the North Fork. I might even share with the rest of you.

Birthdays and anniversaries first. Belated birthday wishes to Jean Quarty, who blew out her candles June 25. The 26th is packed with celebrations. Happy birthday to my oldest daughter, Sam Koslosky, Jacob Boivin and Geoff Fleming from the historical society. Birthday wishes also go to Heather MacArthur on June 28 and Colleen Clark on June 29. Happy third anniversary to Brian and Jen Becker today, June 26.

Welcome to the world Mason Reese Browne, born June 6, to Katelyn Dunne and Tim Browne, weighing 6 pounds, 14 ounces and measuring 19 inches! Proud grandparents are Dan and Donna Dunne and Patty Caufield and Durwood Browne.

Southold fifth-grader Juliet Rand will sing three psalms in a musical showcase of “New Psalm Settings” by local composer Dr. Peter Pece. It will take place Friday, June 27, at 7 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in Riverhead. Admission is free.

The Long Island Press High School Journalism Awards have been announced and once again, The Southold Sentinel brought home numerous awards: third place in Education — Local Issues for “Gamberg Stars on Two Teams” by Gregory Quist; second place in Fashion Feature for “Fashion at the Lost and Found” by Amy Kandora; third place in Humor for Dan Stahl’s “Yellow Jackets”; third place in School Spirit for Shannon Quinn’s “A Measure of Spirit”; third place in Storytelling for “Christmas Break” by Althea Mignone; and first place in Technology for “Tech Squad” by Dan Stahl. Gretchen Walter won third place in Layout/Front Cover for “Summer 2013” and Markis Croteau took first place in Photo Essay for “The 39 Steps.” Well done and congratulations to all!

Saturday, June 28, is a very busy day for Southold. First up, the Southold School Farm Stand will be open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside the elementary school on Oaklawn Avenue. All produce is grown at the school.

The Southold Presbyterian Women will hold their monthly barn sale the same day and time in the barn on Wells Avenue, behind Bank of America. Proceeds go to East End charities.

The Southold Mothers’ Club yard sale is also on the 28th from 9 to 1 (rain date: June 29) at 2095 Elijah’s Lane in Mattituck.

The Southold Historical Society’s summer gala, honoring Peggy Murphy, is Saturday, July 12, 5 to 8 p.m. at Brecknock Hall. Tickets are $75 per person. On July 19 at 6 p.m., the society will host a performance by the Hidden City Orchestra at Horton Point Lighthouse. Tickets are $10 for adults (free for children under 12) and are available at the gate. For details on either event, call 765-5500 or visit southoldhistoricalsociety.org.

The Southold Village Merchants’ Forth of July parade begins at noon and will march down Main Road. Children riding bicycles in the parade should line up on Hobart Road at 11:45 a.m. Come enjoy a family-friendly celebration. But please: No throwing of candy, toys, etc., this year.

My next deadline is Sunday, July 6, at 8 p.m. Email, snail mail or phone calls all work well. Enjoy the days, whether the weather is sunny or rainy. There is always something to make you smile if you look for it. Remember to share your smile with others. Remember your SUNSCREEN, too!
