Walter A. Delaney

Walter A. Delaney of Southold died June 22, 2014, at the age of 89.  

Mr. Delaney was born in the Bronx, New York in 1925 to the late Walter and Adele Delaney. After graduating from Stuyvesant High School, he served with the U.S. Navy, achieving the rank of second lieutenant during World War II. He then attended and graduated from Brown University. Mr. Delaney was an officer of the New York City Police Department for over 30 years, retiring in 1986 at the rank of captain.

He married Margaret Major in 1951. Mr. and Mrs. Delaney lived and raised their family in North Babylon before retiring to Southold. They were married for 60 years.

Upon retirement, Mr. Delaney enjoyed boating, fishing, and golfing with his children and grandchildren, as well as travelling with his wife. He will always be remembered as a loyal, devoted, and loving father and husband. Walter will be laid to rest with his beloved wife, Margaret.

He is survived by sons, Richard of New York City, Kevin of Darien, Conn., Brian of Weston, Conn., Walter of Garden City and Christopher of Clarendon Hills, Ill.; his daughter, Patricia Brown of Fairfield, Conn.; and 15 grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, June 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Monday, June 30, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.
