• “Chariots & Stone,” a photography exhibit by John Berhalter, opens with a reception at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at Suffolk County Historical Society in Riverhead.

A press release says Mr. Berhalter “turns the ordinary into the extraordinary, emphasizing the beauty of antique cars and historical buildings by drawing attention to their form and composition.”

The exhibit, curated by Loretta Corbisiero, will run alongside displays of photos and memorabilia from the Vanderbilt Cup Races, automobile races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910. Both exhibits continue through Sept. 13.

• An exhibit of photography by Michael McLaughlin of Riverhead and oil paintings by Peter Beston of East Quogue opened Friday, Aug. 1, at Jamesport Manor Inn’s Rosalie Dimon Gallery. The show will run through Oct. 29.

Mr. McLaughlin, a research analyst, uses his creative side in his photography. “His quantitative training in combination with a passion for modern and classical architecture has informed his approach to both composition and post-processing technique,” according to a release.

Following many years as a film editor, Mr. Beston now paints full-time on the East End, “where he finds the light and landscape bring him new inspiration.”

An artists’ reception will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17.

• Oil paintings by Jacqueline Palumbo will be on view throughout August at Mattituck-Laurel Library. Ms. Palumbo, who formerly worked for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, retired to Mattituck, where she said the “farms and beaches have become her new life and inspiration.”

• A contemporary Latin and Caribbean art exhibition will be held Aug. 2 to Sept. 7 at Art Sites Gallery in Riverhead.

Rani Carson of Riverhead, who travels to Jamaica several times a year, will show her humanistic paintings. Her work will be joined by that of artists Javier Nino, Ada Colorina and Edgar Martinez from the Genius of Paco gallery in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

A reception is set for Saturday, Aug. 2, from 5 to 7 p.m.

• Photographs by John Stuart and paintings by Pingree Louchheim, both East End artists, will be shown July 31 to Aug. 11 at Gallery Crossing in Peconic.

A press release says, “Stuart’s crisp photographs complemented by the strong light of Louchheim’s paintings create a striking aesthetic.”

An artists’ reception will be held Saturday, Aug. 2, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

• Photographers affiliated with Oysterponds Historical Society are invited to enter their work in the Oysterponds Photo Competition. Photographs of present-day Oysterponds that show “what is important to you about life in East Marion and Orient” may be emailed to [email protected] by Sept. 30. Entries may be chosen for use on an OHS postcard.

Photos must have been taken since Jan. 1, 2012. For details, complete rules and entry form, go to oysterpondshistoricalsociety.org and look under Events.

• “Intimate Connections,” recent works by master printer Dan Welden, can be seen through Sept. 1 at The South Street Gallery in Greenport. A closing reception with the artist will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30.

• A reception for “Conversations,” Wendy Prellwitz’s paintings of the interiors of her family home in Peconic, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1 at Cutchogue New Suffolk Library. The show will continue through Aug. 31.

• “A Larger Life in Small Paintings,” watercolors by Victor Elmaleh, will be on view Aug. 2 to 12 at Kapell Gallery in Greenport. The exhibit is a follow-up to Mr. Elmaleh’s show “A Large Life in Small Paintings,” which was presented in 2011, when he was 92.

An opening reception is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2.
