Southold News: Wave to a fellow boater on the water

I am starting with a question: What happened to waving to your fellow boaters while out enjoying the North Fork waters? I remember as a kid we did it all the time. Now when I wave as we pass other boats, I get strange looks. What is that about? 

Birthdays abound in this column. Caroline MacArthur and Kelly Hillary both blow out candles Aug. 11. Stephanie Biggart celebrates her special day Aug. 14. Aidan Walker celebrates on Aug. 19. Also on the 19th, Chris and Andrea Manfredi celebrate their wedding anniversary.

Robin and Robert Klotz just returned from a two-week vacation in Croatia to celebrate their 29th wedding anniversary July 29. While there, they visited Robin’s father, Joseph Radich.

Southold Mothers’ Club’s 14th annual auction will be held today, Thursday, Aug. 7, at Macari Vineyards. The event, featuring light fare and a chinese auction with a special door prize, runs from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission is $10; there will be a cash wine bar. Everyone will go home with a goody bag!

The Southold PTA kindergarten welcome picnic will be Tuesday, Aug. 19, at 5 p.m. at Founders Landing beach. Rain date is Wednesday, Aug. 20. Bring your picnic dinner, blankets and chairs. The PTA will provide dessert. This is a great opportunity to meet other parents and have your children play together. Contact Jennifer Zaffino at [email protected] with any questions.

The library has some great discount tickets — general admission tickets to the Long Island Game Farm for $10 each, the Bronx Zoo for $21 each and the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center in Riverhead for $16.50 each. In addition, the library’s membership in the Children’s Museum of the East End in Bridgehampton gives library card holders unlimited free access to CMEE’s interactive exhibits. The three-day pass gives admission for two adults and up to four children.

At the library on Mondays, Aug. 18 and 25, from 5 to 9 p.m., Captain John Scourakis will conduct the New York State Boating Safety Course for ages 10 and up. The $35 fee is due at registration, in cash or by check payable to Southold Free Library.

Southold Historical Society will present Bill Roslak performing “An Evening of Opera” at Horton Point Lighthouse Saturday, Aug. 16, at 6 p.m. Bill graduated from Southold High School in 2009 and studied organ performance and sacred music at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J. He recently appeared at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall as a tenor soloist and organist and also performed a solo recital at the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Times Square.
