An 11-year-old boy was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center early Friday afternoon after Southold Police said he struck his head while playing in a pool.

According to police, the boy hit his head on a concrete surface at a Wickham Avenue home, and he and his mother were treated at the scene by Mattituck Fire Department volunteers before the boy was transported.

The call came in around 12:30 p.m., and the Suffolk County Police Aviation Unit used the Strawberry Fields on Route 48 as a landing zone.

Mattituck Fire Chief Vin Tirelli said at the scene that the boy’s injuries were not believed to be serious, and the chopper was called mostly for precautionary reasons.
