Three subjects have been arrested in connection with the overnight shooting in Southold Tuesday morning, Southold Town police chief Martin Flatley confirmed Tuesday evening.

The chief said the two subjects who were being questioned earlier Tuesday were arrested along with a third person involved in the shooting, who suffered non-life threatening injuries and is now in police custody.

The names of the three individuals are expected to be released Wednesday morning, the chief said.

The other two subjects were brought into custody after they were located by police in a car not far from the shooting scene.

“This investigation is still very much active,”Mr. Flatley wrote in an email to reporters.

Two men were shot — one of whom was also severely cut — in the assault in Southold, police said.

Southold Town police got a 911 call at 12:23 a.m. about an assault at a house on South Harbor Road in Southold, where police found two men suffering from gunshot wounds, according to a news release.

Southold Fire Department rescue volunteers were called to the scene after the area was cleared, said Fire Chief Peggy Killian. Chief Killian, who handled the first victim, said the man was shot in the stomach and was “very seriously” hurt.

“He was bleeding out,” she said. “He was hurt.”

The man was rushed into surgery at Peconic Bay Medical Center. The second man was shot in the shoulder and had also been cut, Chief Killian said. He was also taken to the Riverhead hospital for treatment.

An update on the two victims’ conditions was not available Tuesday since their names were never released.

A woman who answered the door at the house where the shooting allegedly occurred declined comment, saying in Spanish that she did not speak English. Beer bottles and a gauze wrapper littered the lawn there and a work boot could be seen a few feet away on a neighbor’s driveway. A boy at the house said the shooting victims do not live there.

South Harbor resident Vincent Gatt expressed disbelief that a shooting occurred in his neighborhood.

“I can’t believe this could have happened here,” he said. “This area has always been safe. It’s God’s country here.”
