Southold News: Rotary hosting annual Scallop Dinner Oct. 21

How are you all doing on my smile challenge? How did you do in the grateful challenge? I know it sounds hokey, but trying to find a little positive every day and smile at people does brighten the day. Try it! 

Birthdays first, as usual. First, three sisters — Ellen Lund, Oct. 7, and Jean Hale and Nancy Cucuro, both born Oct. 18. Connie Sawicki celebrates on Oct. 17; Liam Walker and my dear friend Donna Mosquera on Oct. 18; Landon Bennett (turning 10), Jean Osmer and Tom McCarthy on Oct. 19; Rob Kettenbiel, Cathy Campbell and Ajsia Martocchia on Oct. 21; Michelle Feeley on Oct. 22; Carol Szynaka on Oct. 25; Rich Conrardy and Sally Wolfe on Oct. 26; and Bernie Kettenbiel on Oct. 29.

Belated anniversary wishes go out to Ginny Gilmore and Steve Bertschi, who celebrated 22 years of marriage Oct. 10.

The last barn sale of the year by the Southold Presbyterian women is Saturday, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to noon rain or shine in the barn behind Bank of America. All proceeds go to local charities.

Southold Rotary Club hosts their annual Scallop Dinner Tuesday, Oct. 21, from noon to 9 p.m. at Soundview Restaurant in Greenport. The price is $25 per person, not including gratuity. Roast chicken can be substituted and takeout is available. Proceeds support Rotary Club projects, such as scholarships, Maureen’s Haven, CAST and ELIH. Tickets can be obtained from any Rotarian or at the door.

For the third year, Southold and Greenport high school drama clubs are joining to present a fall comedy. This year, “Don’t Drink the Water,” by Woody Allen, will be directed by Casey Rooney and Jessica Ellwood and presented Friday, Oct. 24, and Saturday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m., all in the district auditorium at Southold High School. Tickets, $10 for adults and $6 for seniors and students, will be available at Southold Free Library and Greenport High School’s main office starting Oct. 22, as well as at the door.

The Southold Mothers’ Club, Group for the East End, Lyrical Children and Macaroni Kid are sponsoring this year’s Family Nature Scavenger Hunt Saturday, Oct. 25, at Downs Farm Preserve. There will be scavenger hunts at various levels appropriate for children up to 12 years old. Registration is strongly advised. Contact Lisa at [email protected] or Missy at [email protected]. The suggested donation is $5.

Southold High School’s Class of 2018 presents the first-ever Memorial Meadow Field of Flags at Southold High School, in which participants, for a $25 fee, sponsor a flag in honor of a veteran, current service member or NJROTC cadet. The 3’ x 5’ flags will be displayed from Nov. 8 to Dec. 8 on the high school lawn, each with a yellow ribbon noting the honoree. Deadline for sponsorship is Oct. 27. Every year, Bishop Murphy honors a parishioner from each church in the diocese. This year’s honoree is Mary Rogers, a 30-year volunteer receptionist and greeter at St. Patrick’s. The convocation will take place at St. Agnes Church in Rockville Centre Oct. 29, when Mary will receive a St. Agnes medal in recognition of her service. Congratulations, Mary, and thank you.

On Sept. 27, Regina Cartselos of Southold, with her team, Insane 8, participated in the Greenway Challenge, a 60-mile race through the Blackstone River Valley in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Participants ran, paddled and biked the course in just over seven hours. Congratulations, Regina!

Vendors are sought for Jump Start the Holidays Gift Fair, Saturday, Nov. 15, at Southold High School. Crafted items, food, music, raffles and more will be featured. Email [email protected].

Support our 11th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade at a fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 18, from noon to 4:00 p.m. at A Touch of Venice, with pipers, step dancers, music, a 50/50 raffle and light food. The cover charge is $10.
