The nights are getting darker and the wind seems to be howling louder these days. That’s right, Halloween is just days away! As we carve our pumpkins and don our ghoulish costumes for parties, special time needs to be set aside to truly get into the spirit of All Hallows Eve. Watch one of these classic horror films and experience a truly terrifying Halloween this year.

Notorious – 1946

Cary Grant graced the silver screen in a number of films that left his female fans swooning. His roles as the sophisticated, and very handsome, leading man landed him a role in Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious in 1946. The film, released shortly after the end of the Holocaust, is a thriller centered around the daughter of a convicted Nazi spy and the love triangle involving a government agent (Grant) and the leading member of the Nazi group in which she was sent to spy on. From espionage to poison and murder, this thrilling tale leaves viewers on edge.

The Blob – 1958

While the plot of The Blob is completely fiction, the sense of fear from watching this movie is not. The indestructible alien amoeba consumes its victims and continues to grow in size as it does so. The teenage hero of the film spends his time not trying to defeat the monster, but alerting his fellow townsmen of the danger. Many of his claims are deemed a prank, but the naysayers all learn the hard way. If you fear the blob yourself, the good news is that it is vulnerable to the cold, and the Arctic is where the human-eating creature now resides.

Cape Fear – 1962

Attorney Sam Bowden sends a felon to prison for rape, only to have the convict released eight years later with a mission of seeking his revenge. The 1962 production of Cape Fear chronicles Bowden’s fight to keep his family safe from Max Cady as he continues to attack unknowing victims, stalk the family, and murder the innocent. Gregory Peck plays the leading role of the hero who triumphs in the end, but not without a psychologically thrilling fight first.

Carrie – 1976

Based on the novel by the ever-so-creepy Stephen King, Carrie is the supernatural horror film that became a household name. Starring Sissy Spacek as the tormented teenager, this movie includes a lot of supernatural happenings, tons of blood (both human and pig), and enough terrifying acts to keep you awake for weeks. The film has been remade several times, but nothing compares to Spacek’s portrayal of the ill-fated Carrie.

Silence of the Lambs – 1991

Serial killer films are perfect for Halloween, but few are truly scarier than Silence of the Lambs. With Anthony Hopkins as the incarcerated cannibal, and former psychiatrist, this movie will have your mind reeling and head turning in every scene. The heroine’s safety is secured at the end, but the fate of others is left unclear as cannibal Hannibal Lecter says “I am having an old friend for dinner.” Be sure to have your dinner first before watching.

Many of these classics have also had their remakes, but nothing beats the original. Visit the local library to rent one this week and get ready for Halloween. You may want to have a friend over to watch these horrifying flicks as well. Happy Halloween!
