Special meeting called in Greenport for paving project

Greenport Village is holding a special meeting next Tuesday to authorize a paving project for sections of Moores Lane and Main Street before winter hits — though the cost remains unclear at the moment.

The village plans to fund the project, which includes paving the sections of Main Street and Moores Lane from Bridge to Manor Place, village administrator Paul Pallas said Thursday. Although a cost for the project has not been finalized yet, Mr. Pallas said that the board would have an estimate prior to its vote next week.

The new project comes almost a month after the village and state officials couldn’t reach a deal to include the damaged stretch of Main Street repaved as a part of the state Department of Transportation’s $6.9 million repaving project. Instead the village, Southold Town and the DOT are looking into joint federal grants to repave the village-maintained road in the long-term.

Tuesday’s vote is a short-term solution to repair the roads before the winter, Mr. Pallas said.

“It is really a timing issue,” Mr. Pallas said. “That section of Main Street is the worst section. We need to get something done there before winter and in advance of anything we hope to accomplish there in the future.”

Moores Lane, a village maintained road, will also receive repairs as a part of the project.

“We know that area needs to be paved, so we decided that as long as we were getting some of Main Street done we would get Moores Lane done as well,” he said.

The special meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. in Village Hall, 236 Third Street.
