Bertha K. Gancarz

Bertha K. Gancarz of Cutchogue died Nov. 23 at her home. She was 85. She was born on Sept. 30, 1929, to Alexander and Pauline Matwieczyk and attended Mattituck High School.

On Sept. 4, 1949, she married Paul A. Gancarz at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue.

A lifelong resident of Cutchogue, Bertha was a communicant of Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C Church, sang in the choir and was a member of the Rosary Society.

Bertha had been a farmer, gardener and baker and will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband Paul A. Gancarz; two daughters Patricia (Robert) VanBourgondien and Debra (Robert) Nowak ; a sister, Helen Misterka of Glastonbury, Conn.; six grandchildren: Brian (Alice) Nowak of Manorville, Kevin Nowak of Medford, Jaclyn VanBourgondien (Andrew) Tralka of Maui, Hawaii, Betsy VanBourgondien of New Market, N.H., Kimberly and Cynthia VanBourgondien of Southold and a great-grandson, Samuel Paul Nowak of Manorville. She was predeceased by her siblings Anthony, in 1948, John, in 2003, Joe in 1988 and Jane, in 2006.

The family received visitors Nov. 26 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold A Liturgy of Christian Burial followed at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church, Father Stan Wadowski and Monsignor John Nosser officiating. Interment took place at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.
