Rita V. Gibbons

Greenport resident Rita V. Gibbons, formerly of Glen Head, died Nov. 28. She was 89.
She was born Feb. 11, 1925, in Brooklyn to Katherine (McCaffery) and Edward Budd. She married Arthur Gibbons at St. Jerome’s Church in Brooklyn. The couple was together for 64 years.

Ms. Gibbons graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Fordham University, where in 1946, she served as editor-in-chief of The Grail yearbook. She later received a Masters of Education from C.W. Post. Ms. Gibbons was a teacher with the Glen Cove School District for 17 years. She was a member of the New York State United Teachers Union and The Woman’s Club of Glen Cove.

Family members said she was an avid reader, world traveler, historian, veteran Girl Scout, golfer, and nature lover.

Ms. Gibbons was predeceased by her sisters, Doris Furnari and Nancy Mannon and her brother, Kevin Budd. She is survived by her children, Nan (Russel) Iuculano, Kim E. (Peter) Sweeney, Myles S. Gibbons, Amy (Robert) Colvin, Kieran P. (Margaret) Gibbons; 12 grandchildren, and one 1 great-grandchid.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Dec. 2, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral Mass will take place Wednesday, Dec. 3, at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. Cremation will be private.
