Update: Suspect in fatal DWI crash posts $250 bail

Update 5:30 p.m. Sunday: John Costello Sr., who was charged Saturday with DWI stemming from a fatal car crash in Greenport, has posted $250 bail and remains at Stony Brook Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, Southold Town police said.

A hospital spokesperson said Mr. Costello was listed in fair condition Monday afternoon. He is expected to be arraigned on a misdemeanor driving while intoxicated charge at a later date.

The driver of the other vehicle, Oseas Ramirez, was charged with driving without a license, police said.

Original story: A Peconic man was killed and a 71-year-old Greenport man was charged with driving drunk after a car crash Saturday night in Greenport, Southold Town police said.

John Costello Sr., 71, of Greenport was driving a 2008 Chevy pickup truck eastbound on Route 25 shortly before 7 p.m. when he crossed into the westbound lane and hit an oncoming 2006 Honda driven by 22-year-old Oseas Ramirez, police said.

Mr. Ramirez and a passenger, Bartolone Miguel, 32, also of Peconic, were taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital. Mr. Bartolone later died at the hospital from his injuries.

Mr. Costello was first taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital and later transported to Stony Brook University Medial Center by ambulance, police said.

Greenport and Southold firefighters assisted in the rescue efforts.

Southold Town police and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the crash. Mr. Costello, who is a former Village Board trustee and owns Costello Marine in Greenport, was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, officials said.

He is in police custody at the hospital and being treated for his injuries, officials confirmed at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
