Robert Tuthill Demarest

Lifelong Orient resident, Robert Tuthill Demarest, passed away Dec. 7, 2014, at San Simeon Nursing Home in Greenport. He was 87. 

Robert was born June 19, 1927, in Orient to Harrison M., Sr. and Cora (née Tuthill) Demarest. He was a potato farmer along with his brothers and father, most of his life. He married Barbara Downs Oct. 15, 1950.

In his younger years Robert enjoyed hunting and playing cards at Triangle Yacht Club in Greenport. He was also a longtime member and past chief of Orient Fire Department.

Robert is survived by his wife; his daughter, Janet (Robert) Johnson of Connecticut; and granddaughters, Kerri and Jillian Johnson, also of Connecticut. He is also survived by his nephews, Jeffrey and Carl Demarest of Orient, David Demarest of Florida; and nieces, Georgiana Lanza and Carolyn Gallagher of New Jersey. Robert was predeceased by his brothers, Harrison Demarest, Jr. and Louis M. Demarest; and his son, Michael R. Demarest.

There will be a graveside service at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.
