Mattituck News: Saying thanks for the last 25 years

There are so many things to be thankful for as I write this last column of 2014. Family, good health and good friends top of the list. It’s now been 25 years since I began writing this column, so I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank all the readers who call, email and keep me up to date with all the joyful things that happen around our community. May you and yours have a very merry Christmas filled with magic and may 2015 be the best year yet!

Belated birthday wishes go out this week to Oswald Cueller, Rhiannon Cherney and Halle Foster who celebrated earlier this week.

Art Partners, a school club that celebrates our young artists, will host a karaoke night Friday, Jan. 9. Admission is $5.

The Mattituck-Cutchogue Athletic Booster Club is creating an alumni brick garden on the west side of the high school gymnasium. Bricks can be purchased and engraved with the names and years of past and future Mattituck High School graduates. All money raised will benefit Mattituck athletics. Visit mufsd.com for an order form.

Birthday candles will glow to celebrate the following people in the next few weeks: Missy Lechner, Deb DePaulis, Linda Kozen, Sarah Santacroce, Grace Golder, Sean McBride, Will Gildersleeve, Mary Kalish, Caitlynne Petersen, Virginia Hoffman, Tom Smith, Meghan Riley, Carol O’Connor, Joey Macari, Aaron Pacholk, Pat Fedun, Christian Bennardo, Dylan Greenberg, Nicole Fedun, Nina Lentini, Claire Smith, Jill Ross, Alex Papadopoulos, Elena Grefe, Katie Ross, Marcos Perivolaris and Gabriella Macari. Happy birthday to all!

Congratulations to Courtney Murphy and Chris Dwyer, who were both selected for the Suffolk Zone Physical Education Award.

The calendar raffle to support our students’ spring trip to Spain is ongoing. The latest winners are James Doroski, Michele Messinger, Lisa Galvin, Juan Romero and Julie Milliman.

Welcome home to Stephen Urwand, who graduated last week from Coast Guard boot camp in Cape May, N.J. After the holidays, Stephen will be off to Hawaii for a few months.

Bravo to the talented members of the MHS Jazz Ensemble, High School Band and Chorus and Select Chorus. Their concert in the auditorium was packed with people enjoying the sounds of the season, including former superintendent Jim McKenna and his wife, Theresa, and alumni Justin Tyler, Jacob Branker, Caleb Smith, Joe Nadel, Corrine Araneo, Casey Binkowski, Kyle Verity and Katherine Golde. The highlight of their wonderful performance was the “first draft” of a school song originally penned in 1934. Rah, rah, rah! What a great way to begin the countdown to the holiday vacation. School will be closed until Jan. 5, 2015!

And speaking of 2015, my column will be on vacation until the issue of Jan. 22. See you then.
