Carol E. Kirkpatrick Spooner

Carol E. Kirkpatrick Spooner, 91, passed away Jan. 25, 2015 at the Shores at Peconic Landing in Greenport. Formerly a 45-year resident of Southampton, she had lived Peconic Landing for the past 12 years. She was the wife of Richard S. Spooner, a former mayor of Southampton Village. 

She was born April 27, 1923, in Brookyn to Helen (Coffin) James Walter Kirpatrick. Carol attended Jamaica High School and obtained a bachelor’s degree from Cortland University and a master’s degree from St. Lawrence University, where she had a teaching fellowship. She taught physical education for many years at Sewanhaka High, Pierson High and Shelter Island schools.

Carol served as president of Southampton Hospital Advisory Board, and volunteered  as a Pink Lady at the hospital. She was president of the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton Women’s Association.

Family members said Carol played semi-professional golf for a short time and won a New York State golf championship. In addition to golf, she enjoyed painting, bridge, reading, knitting, rug hooking, and making lamp shades.

She is predeceased by her daughter Jan E. Spooner Rose and survived by her husband, Richard S. of Greenport; her son Richard Kirk Spooner of Mastic and his wife, Joyce; her son Douglas Simpson Spooner of Cross Junction, Va., and his wife, Donna T.; her son-in-law, Roger W. Rose of Southold; her grandchildren, Robert Bahner of Riverhead, Stephanie Rutledge of Texas, Roger Wesley Rose Jr. of Greenport, Brett Spooner of Virginia, Tyson Spooner of Texas, Sarah Rose Nesbitt of Southold, Kirk Spooner of Mastic, and Trey Spooner of Virginia; and her great-grandchildren, Taylor, Makayla, Ava, Aiden, Laila, Cameron and Harper.

A funeral service was held Jan. 31 at Southold Presbyterian Church. Cremation was private.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, First Presbyterian Church of Southampton, or First Presbyterian Church of Southold in Carol’s name.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.
