New Suffolk School District’s superintendent resigns

New Suffolk School District Superintendent Michael Comanda has resigned from the position he’s held since 2012.

Mr. Comanda, who also retired last year as Greenport School District’s superintendent, told The Suffolk Times on Wednesday he submitted a letter of resignation to the school board 30 days ago.

He said his reason for leaving the part-time position “came up kind of quickly.”

“The reason is personal and my plans are personal,” he said, declining further comment.

In January, Mr. Comanda was put in charge of preparing the upcoming school budget, a task normally handled by school board president Tony Dill.

Mr. Dill said Mr. Comanda has done a “significant” amount of work for the 2015-16 school budget; Mr. Dill will complete the budget work and discuss priorities with residents at a board meeting this coming Tuesday.

Mr. Dill said Mr. Comanda’s last day will be tomorrow, Friday.

“His resignation was sudden and unanticipated,” Mr. Dill said.

He said the school has received “strong recommendations from several sources” about an unnamed person who may fill the superintendent role, adding the district is in the final stages of reaching an agreement with the candidate.

“We are hopeful we can convince him to accept the position,” Mr. Dill said. “The process we are following is exactly the same as what was done in hiring the last two superintendents at New Suffolk.”
