Greenport News: Donating books to celebrate children’s lives

Spring may have sprung, but certainly not here. I’ll be happy to travel to Virginia in the near future, where my daughter has reported temperatures in the seventies.

Think you can cook? So do the students in Mrs. Ladalia’s home economics class — and they’ve got a trophy to prove it. A team consisting of Jonathan Vasquez (captain), Richard Torres-Galicia, Walfred Gatica, Antonio Anderson and Antonio Coria traveled to Whole Foods in Lake Grove last Saturday for the Junior Iron Chef competition. Their challenge was to prepare something that was quick to cook and met the federal school cafeteria guidelines. The boys served grilled zucchini and red peppers in a wrap, with a tomato cream sauce. (It was absolutely delicious!) When all was said and done, the team returned to Greenport with a second-place trophy. Way to go!

Expecting a new arrival? Or know of someone who is? The Friends of Floyd Memorial Library will donate a book to its children’s collection to celebrate any child born to parents living in our library district since Jan. 1, 2014. A bookplate with the child’s name and birthdate will be placed on the inside cover. Sign up at the desk in the children’s room or see librarian Joe Cortale for more information.

Speaking of new arrivals, congratulations are in order for Lexi Sulahian and Tim Heaney on the birth of their son, Ford Matthew. Ford blessed us with his presence March 18, tipping the scales at nine pounds, five ounces. He is now resting comfortably at home under the watchful eye of big brother Weston.

The Southold Rotary’s annual chicken and ribs dinner (fish lovers can substitute salmon) is set for Tuesday, April 28, from noon to 8 p.m. at the Soundview Restaurant. The cost is $20 per person and takeout is available. Get your tickets from any Southold Rotarian or at the door.

The NCAA has nothing on Greenport High School. Thanks to the Student Council and adviser Kathy Richter, March Madness will come to the North Fork tomorrow evening, Friday, March 27, starting at 6 p.m. Students from Shelter Island, Greenport, Southold and Mattituck-Cutchogue will gather in the big gym to vie for bragging rights as to who has the best team.

The family of Joe Aloi Jr. is sending him special birthday wishes as he celebrates his 50th on March 30. Happy birthday, Joe!
