BLUE WAVES 11, TUCKERS 5

The difference in skill level between Leagues II and IV in Suffolk County high school boys lacrosse was clearly spelled out on Monday. Riverhead, described as a middle-of-the-pack team in League II by its coach, Vic Guadagnino, gave League IV Mattituck/Greenport/Southold all it can handle and more in a non-league game.

After scoring the game’s first six goals (two by Austin Fitzpatrick), Riverhead maintained at least a four-goal lead the rest of the way and posted an 11-5 win at Mattituck High School. It was the Tuckers’ first loss of the season.

Following the game, Guadagnino said he particularly liked what he saw from his face-off man, John Ehlers, and goaltenders, John Roca and Jacob Coleman, who split time in net.

Ehlers came up with a game-high 15 ground balls as well as winning 13 of 19 face-offs to set up the offense. Roca made five saves, including one from point-blank range; Coleman made eight stops.

Guadagnino also had to like what he saw from Mark Andrejack, the middie who fired in four goals from 11 shots.

The Blue Waves (2-3, 0-2) had good scoring balance. Chris Flood scored one goal and assisted on two others. Ben Weir, Kerry Thomas, Andre Juarez and Jake Zuhoski also found the net. Fitzpatrick had two assists to go with his two goals.

Mattituck/Greenport/Southold (2-1, 2-0) didn’t get on the scoreboard until Tyler Seifert finally put a ball past Roca, converting off a feed from Zach Holmes with 4 minutes 14 seconds left in the second quarter.

Tim Schmidt scored twice for the Tuckers. Matt Mauceri added a goal and two assists, and Jack DiGregorio also put in a goal.

Kyle Sopko, an assistant coach, ran the Tuckers in place of coach John Amato, who had another commitment and could not be at the game.
