Health Beat: Zumbathon fundraiser set for Sunday

• To benefit San Simeon by the Sound, a Zumbathon fundraiser led by popular instructors will be held Sunday, April 19, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Cutchogue East Elementary School. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. For tickets, visit sansimeonbythesound.com

• Peconic Landing’s employee of the month for April is Maria Cruz, who has been with the facility’s housekeeping department for close to five years.

In a release, director of environmental services Darryl Volinski said Ms. Cruz “has a willingness to exercise leadership, take initiative and carry out additional responsibilities.”

Describing her as a “great asset” to Peconic Landing, Mr. Volinski continued, “She is a team player … organized and always ready for the next task to move the department in the right direction.”

• The April employee of the month at San Simeon by the Sound Center for Nursing, Rehabilitation and Adult Day Health Care is Deborah Corbett of the physical therapy department. A former cross-country truck driver who also has experience working with handicapped children and the elderly, Ms. Corbett transports San Simeon residents and assists in driving the facility’s bus.

In a release, director of rehabilitation Carrie Engblom said Ms. Corbett, who will soon earn qualification as a certified nursing assistant, “is always upbeat, happy and eager to please. She is dedicated and will go way beyond the call of duty.”

• East End Hospice will offer a free program on ‘The Longest Loss: Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia’ Wednesday, April 22, from 1:30-4:30 p.m. in the lower level meeting room at Riverhead Free Library. According to a release, video interviews and a moderated panel discussion with topic experts will present candid information to “help patients and families cope with the loss and grief associated with these progressive illnesses.” Refreshments will be served.
