Close Old Sound Avenue in Mattituck?

That’s what some are suggesting, once again.

But this time, the plan to create a pedestrian walkway with sculptures and benches may move beyond wishful thinking. Supervisor Scott Russell, civic and business leaders are set to discuss the plan soon, those familiar with the plan say.

The idea was first floated as part of the Southold Hamlet Studies in 2005, said Mary Eisenstein, president of the Mattituck-Laurel Civic Association. But the plan was ultimately forgotten over the years.

Now, the civic group and the local Chamber of Commerce want to get the idea back before the Southold Town Board.

“This can be the emotional center, the physical center, the character center of Mattituck,” Ms. Eisenstein said.

At the Town Planning Board meeting Monday evening, planner Mark Terry presented a rough outline of the possible closure plan, which would include parking accommodations for the nearby church as well as sculptures.

The idea, which town officials said is still in its infancy, will now be referred by memo to the Town Board, who may discuss it further.

Ms. Eisenstein said her group, the Chamber of Commerce and Mr. Russell will meet soon to discuss ways to make the pedestrian area a reality.
