The Cutchogue Fire Department responded to a fuel spill on Route 48 in Cutchogue Monday afternoon.

A westbound Hyundai Elantra hit something in the road that punctured its gas tank, said captain Amos Meringer of the Cutchogue Fire Department.

It was uncertain how long the car had been driving before the leak was detected about 2 p.m., officials said.

The driver pulled over to the side of the road just west of Bridge Lane after smelling fuel and was not injured, Mr. Meringer said.

Firefighters used a Plug N Dike Kit to contain the spill until a tow truck came to take the car away.
