Southold News: Competition dancers to perform at Mattituck H.S.

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, flowers are popping and I love it. As the weather warms, it is hard not to just walk outside with a sigh. It’s a beautiful time of year.

Birthday wishes start with triplets: May 11 is the 6th birthday of Tristan, Kyle and Aaron Davis. Mommy and Daddy can’t believe how big you are getting. Other birthdays are Ed Baumann Sr. on May 12; Bridget Rymer and my husband, Jim — love you — May 15; Pete Kelley, May 16; and our son, Jack — love you, too — May 17.

Happy anniversary to Dan and Donna Dunne on May 17.

The Southold Animal Shelter will sponsor a low-cost spay and neuter clinic Thursday, May 14. This is done by appointment only, so call 631-566-8870 to book your time. If you can’t make it on the 14th, this will be a monthly event, so stay tuned for further details.

The shelter’s second annual yard sale is scheduled for Saturday, June 6. Donations can now be dropped off at the shelter — but please, no books or clothes.

The shelter is also seeking donations of canned and dry cat food, and large-size dog biscuits. For questions or more information about all this, call 765-1811, ext. 1. Also subscribe to their Facebook page: North Fork Animal Welfare League, Inc/Southold Animal Shelter.

Southold competition dancers from North Fork Academy of Dance — Sarah Perry, Morgan Walter, Kimiko Fujita, Daisy Rymer, Meg Pickerell, Hanna DeSimone, Juliet and Violet Rand and Bella DeMaio — will perform a competition showcase at Mattituck High School on May 17 at 4 p.m. Tickets are $12 and proceeds will support their trip to nationals in Hershey, Pa., this summer. Come and watch as all 38 local dancers perform their routines from this year’s competition season! Contact any dancer for tickets or purchase them at the door.

The Southold Board of Education seeks nominees for its humanitarian award, the William J. McGonegal Memorial Award, which will recognize and honor a graduating senior who possesses the qualities of outstanding citizenship, kindness, compassion, generosity, unselfishness, personal initiative and moral courage. You can submit a candidate’s name and a brief description of his or her qualities to principal William Galati, 420 Oaklawn Ave., P.O. Box 470, Southold, NY 11971. The deadline for nominations is May 18. The award will be presented at Commencement.

The North Fork Alliance is sponsoring a series of parenting classes for parents of children in grades 8-11. All classes are on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in room 3 of the Peconic Lane Community Center. The topics will be “Red-Flag Behaviors: When to Worry About Adolescents,” May 19; “Does your Teen Rule the Roost?” June 2; and “Teen-Parent Communication: What Works and What Doesn’t,” June 16. For more information call 631-833-0609.

A car seat safety event co-sponsored by CAST, EAC Network and the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department will be held Saturday, June 6, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Southold Fire Department. Did you know three out of four car seats are installed incorrectly, which endangers the children riding in them? This important safety check is done on an appointment-only basis, so call 631-648-7100, ext. 219, to sign up.

Congratulations to Southold Fireman of the Year Ed Rudder. Your family is so very proud of you.

My next column is due May 17. Please get me your information ahead of time.

I want to wish all mothers out there a Happy Mother’s Day. A friend recently posted a song on Facebook that is fitting, Garth Brooks’ “Meet your Mom.” Hug your moms tightly. Let them know you love them, especially when they drive you nuts. Love you, Mom!
