Thomas D. Reilly

Thomas D. Reilly of Greenport died peacefully May 11, 2015, at San Simeon by the Sound in Greenport. He was 90. 

He was born March 27, 1925, in Brooklyn to Charlotte (Gunser) and Thomas D. Reilly Sr. He is survived by his loving wife, Theresa, of Greenport; his children, Janet Pekarek of Statesville, N.C., Brendan, of Amityville, Thomas, of New York City; his daughter-in-law, Jean Reilly-LoRusso; his sister, Joan Rochford of New Jersey; and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Matthew in 2005; his son-in-law, Christopher Pekarek; and his sister Marilyn Raskopf.

Thomas served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 during World War II and marched through France into Germany, where he was wounded and subsequently awarded the Purple Heart medal. As a result of his service in France, he was honored as a chevalier in the French Legion of Honor.

Thomas attended college at New York Technical Institute and worked as an art director for Met Life, and his love for art was a hobby he shared with all. He created Christmas cards for friends and family every year. His grandchildren loved having art lessons at “Pop-Pop’s” art table.

Thomas moved from Merrick to retire on the North Fork in 1991. He was an active member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Disabled American Veterans.

He was well-known for his outgoing personality and wonderful sense of humor. Thomas enjoyed many activities, such as golfing, bowling, fishing and spending time with family.

The family received visitors May 14 at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. A funeral service took place May 15  at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. Cremation was be private and interment will take place at a later date at Calverton National Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lustgarten Foundation or New York Diabetes Association.
