A 26-year-old Southold man crashed into a pole on New Suffolk Avenue early Wednesday morning and was charged with driving while intoxicated, Southold Town police said.

Benjamin Oliver faces a felony charge after allegedly crashing at 2:25 a.m., police said.

A witness who lives nearby the accident said Mr. Oliver appeared disoriented after the crash and kept saying “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”

Donald Kirby said the accident caused live electric wires to come down near the car and police had to use caution before approaching the vehicle. He said a PSEG crew came to turn off the power.

Mr. Oliver was transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment of his injuries where he was found to be intoxicated, police said. He was arrested and held for arraignment.

Mr. Oliver has a previous DWI arrest, according to a prior report.
