Greenport News: Varsity athletes to be honored tonight

Say what? It’s June already? Why does it seem like just last week I was welcoming the additions to Greenport Schools at the start of another school year?

Tonight, Thursday, June 4, at 6 p.m., Greenport’s varsity athletes will be honored at a sports awards ceremony in the auditorium. After the presentation, light fare will be served in the cafeteria. Athletes: Dress to impress!

All GHS athletes and their parents should know that the school doctor will be available one last time for sports physicals on Thursday, June 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Varsity and JV athletes whose physicals are not current should set up an appointment. To avoid any delays on the first morning of practice in August, it’s also suggested that you complete a sports contract now and return it to me in the high school office before the school year ends.

An adult lecture series will take place Thursday evenings during June, July and August at the East End Seaport Museum. The first talk, on June 11, will be given by Greenporter Otto Schoenstein, grand marshal of last year’s Maritime Festival. For a complete lecture schedule, visit eastendseaport.org. Reservations are suggested; call 477-2100 or contact [email protected].

The East End Seaport Museum also has a Catch-a-Clue contest to identify this year’s festival grand marshal. A new clue will be posted every day on their Facebook page. The first entry with the correct name drawn during the museum’s seasonal opening on Saturday, June 6, at 4 p.m. will win two tickets to the Super Cruise.

As if it were yesterday, I can remember Jim and I returning from our honeymoon 38 years ago to hear the horrific news that we’d lost two firefighters. This year’s memorial service for Richie Sycz and Bruce Bellefountaine will be held Sunday, June 14, at 6 p.m. All Greenport firefighters are asked to gather beforehand at the memorial at Fire Station No. 1 on Third Street.

Four graduations will take place at Greenport Schools this year. On Friday, June 19, the kindergartners graduate at 10 a.m. and the pre-K class at 1 p.m.  This is the last day of school for both. The sixth-grade graduation is set for Wednesday, June 24, at 1 p.m. and commencement for the high school’s Class of 2015 takes place Sunday, June 28, at 1 p.m. All ceremonies will be in the school auditorium.

Collectively, members of the Dinizio family will celebrate 215 years of marriage this coming week! Jim and I will mark 38 years of wedded bliss on June 5. June 6 is anniversary No. 64 for Jim’s parents, Marie and Jim, and No. 67 for his aunt and uncle Audrey and Lou Dinizio. Another aunt and uncle, Pat and Bill Dinizio, celebrate 46 years together on June 7.

Also celebrating are Mary Jane and John Hughes, married 28 years on June 13, and Brandi (née Monique) and Olusegun Okesola, whose second anniversary is June 15.
