Peconic native representing USA again in world championship
Sarah Sinning has her sights set on gold.
A Peconic native who plays ice hockey at Manhattanville College, Sinning is currently playing on the Team USA Senior Women’s team at the 2015 FIRS Inline Hockey World Championships in Rosario, Argentina.
It’s the second straight year Sinning represented her country on a roller hockey team. Last year she helped the Team USA Junior Women’s team to a sliver medal in France, scoring four goals and four assists in six games. The team lost to Spain in the finals, 4-2.
Sinning, 18, has scored one goal with an assist so far in this year’s tournament, which began Sunday. Team USA opened the tournament Sunday with a 3-3 tie against Finland. The next day the team defeated Argentina, 3-1. On Tuesday, the team came back from a 2-1 hole to beat Colombia, 5-2 behind four goals from Laura Veharanta of California.
Pool play ends Wednesday and the playoff bracket starts the next day. The finals are Saturday.
Team USA is in the five-team Pool A, which features Finland, Argentina, Italy and Colombia. The Pool B features Span, Mexico, India and Czech Republic.
Sinning grew up as a roller hockey play, skating alongside her brother, Jack, and sister, Nicole. Looking to advance her career in ice hockey, she left the North Fork after her sophomore year to attend the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid. She played for two years on the ice hockey team at the academy, helping land a spot at Manhattanville.
A forward, Sinning played 22 games in her rookie season at Manhattanville this year, scoring five goals. She was nominated as the ECAC East Rookie of the Week in late January.
Team USA currently competing in Argentina is looking to repeat as champions. Last year’s team captured the championship, outscoring opponents 29-0 in pool play before beating Canada, 3-2, in the finals.
