Fifth Street Park in Greenport is about to be home to a brand new basketball court.
Contractors arrived at the park Monday morning to rip up the existing concrete court and replace it with a new asphalt playing surface, village officials said.
Construction on the updated court will be completed by the end of the week, said village administrator Paul Pallas.
In addition to the new surface, which will be fully striped, the park will receive new hoops. Construction will cost nearly $33,000 on the project that was approved more than a year ago.
“It’s good news for Greenport,” said Mayor George Hubbard.
The basketball court is located on the Sixth Street side of the park.
