The severe thunderstorm that passed through the area early Tuesday morning left more than 6,000 PSEG-LI customers without power on the North Fork, according to the utility.

The storm, which produced a period of frequent lightning bursts and even hail in some areas, passed through northern Suffolk County shortly before 6 a.m. A severe thunderstorm warning issued by the National Weather Service expired at 6:15 a.m.

The storm downed trees in the area, including one large oak that shut down Peconic Lane in Peconic.

The majority of the local homes left without power were in Southold, Cutchogue, Peconic, with more in Wading River and Baiting Hollow. About half of the outages had been restored by 10 a.m. but many others might not be restored until as late as 7 p.m., PSEG-LI said.

The outages are among the more than 35,000 across Suffolk County Tuesday morning. An additional 15,000 outages were reported in Brookhaven Town and there were 7,500 more in Smithtown.
