Oysterponds News: Bluegrass band at Floyd Memorial Library

Joe Papa did a yeoman’s job orchestrating the recent Orient Congregational Church Fair and would like to thank everyone who donated goods, sorted, priced, sold and purchased that weekend. A special thank you to Joe, who went above and beyond to make this a success.

In the age of ‘auto correct,’ we often get a laugh from how the computer changes our words. In the case of a name, it is often baffled. Apologies to the Thorps for the addition of an “e” to the end of their name in the last column.

Speaking of the Thorps, Frank and Paula once again outdid themselves in the host/hostess department last weekend. On Saturday, son Frank III (Frankie) and his bride, Shannon Audette, were married in Hallocks Bay aboard his sister Jill Doherty’s boat. Jill also performed the ceremony. Also aboard the bridal boat were Frank and Paula and son/brother Charlie Thorp, who came from South Carolina. On nearby boats were Frankie’s sister Ann Asaro with her husband, Michael, and daughters, Michaela and Samantha, and assorted family and friends. As they left Hallocks Bay they were greeted by a Shelter Island fireboat that blessed their union with a spray of water. They took pictures at Bug Light (nephew Brian Doherty jumped in as photographer) and headed back to Frank Thorp Jr.’s East Marion home, where 130 plus friends and family greeted them on the shore blowing bubbles. The newlyweds honeymooned this week on Block Island and will return to their Southold home soon. Congratulations all around!

OPU alumna Nicki Gohorel, who has been living in Turkey for five years, has launched an Internet business called Simply Nicki and her sweet treats are flying off the page. While she is modifying her webpage you can peruse her Simply Nicki Facebook page and shop for her confections. Her plans are to return to East Marion with her husband, Selcuk Keles, in tow sometime within the next year. Right now, her sweets can be found at the Orient Country Store, where she has been working and cooking up a storm for the last few months.

Oysterponds own Sandra Chapin, along with her Bluegrass band Dunegrass, will perform a family-friendly concert Friday, Aug. 14, at 6 p.m. at Floyd Memorial Library. Bring your lawn chair, your kids, your dinner and c’mon down for a fun event.

Join your neighbors this Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Old Orchard Farm Store on Village Lane from 5 to 7 p.m. for the opening of Alan Bull’s exhibit of North Fork paintings, which will be on view until Sept. 7.

There’s still time to catch the last few weeks of the Fridays at noon lecture series at Orient Methodist Church. It continues this week with “Catherine of Siena: Woman of Holiness and History.” Call Geoff Proud at 323-3523 for more details.

A performance by Steven Blier is always a special treat and the Aug. 23 “Latin Lovers” concert at Poquatuck Hall promises not to disappoint, with Latin American music from the concert hall, the theater and the dance floor on the program. Reservations are required for this New York Festival of Song emerging artists series, which features soprano Anna Dugan, mezzo soprano Amanda Bottoms, tenor Alexander McKissick, baritone Dimitri Katotakis and, of course, pianist extraordinaire Steven Blier. Call Jane Smith at 323-1378 to reserve your $20 ticket.

When I was a kid we always joked that when a friend was missing from our playground he or she had run away and joined the circus. So if that is still on your bucket list, today and tomorrow is your opportunity, as the big top gets pitched on Moore’s Lane in Greenport. It is always a festive time.

My next column goes to bed Aug. 17 and will appear here on the 20th. See you then.
