Southold News: Homecoming games this week
I am amazed by how many people are ready for fall.
Well, the calendar and the weather say it’s here. I love the change of color, the crisp air — though I will miss my flip-flops eventually. I marvel at the different reactions with regard to clothing. The white is gone; the plaid is in. Some people fight the cold saying it is fine with a T-shirt, while others are bundled in layers already. No matter your reaction, I hope you take a moment to enjoy the beauty of each day.
Birthday celebrations are in the cards for Joyce Wilkens on Sept. 26; Chris Manfredi Jr. on the 28th; Carol Chilton, Oct. 4; Melissa Hyatt DeSimone, Oct. 5; and Ellen Lund, Oct. 7. Happy birthday to YOU!
Big congratulations go out to Rose and John Berryman, who celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary Sept. 30. Barbara and Barry Charles recently celebrated their 50th anniversary with a trip to Hawaii, followed by a family picnic and tour of the New York Botanical Garden and topped off with the barbecue and fireworks at the Pridwin on Shelter Island.
This weekend will be exceptionally busy in Southold, with lots to do and fun to be had. Southold High School will celebrate Homecoming on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 25-26. A girls’ varsity soccer game against Mattituck will kick off the celebration Friday at 4 p.m. On Saturday at 11 a.m. the boys’ varsity soccer team plays Smithtown Christian, followed by the annual men’s alumni soccer game. Any alumni interested in playing can register on the athletic page at southoldufsd.com.
During Saturday’s game, look for the girls’ soccer team’s booth. The team members joined forces with Andrea Bisignani of Andrea’s Artistic Albums in Riverhead, who donated her time, facilities and tools to help the girls make cards for their Kicks for Cancer fundraiser. The cards will be sold for $3 each or 2 for $5. If you’re wondering about Homecoming for Greenport-Southold-Mattituck Football, it is set for Oct. 23.
The Presbyterian Women will hold a barn sale this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine, on Wells Avenue, behind Bank of America. Furniture, jewelry, porcelain, glassware, household items, fishing poles, etc. will be on sale. Proceeds are contributed to local charities.
Southold Free Library presents “Sunday Story: A Conversation with Eleanor Lingo” on Sept. 27 at 3 p.m., hosted by Vivian Eyre. Beginning in the 1950s, Ms. Lingo anonymously laid an annual Christmas wreath on the grave of “Bloom,” a black woman who was buried in the Southold Presbyterian Church cemetery in 1810. Learn how her simple act made history in Southold. Ms. Lingo will share how her beliefs, her family and leaving home led to a variety of career successes, and made her a workplace pioneer who crossed over color line barriers in the 1950s and ’60s. Refreshments will be served.
Southold Fire Department’s AHA Training Center recently earned Suffolk REMSCO/REMAC’s Gold Medal Community CPR Award for training 1,638 people in CPR. On hand to receive the award were Chief James Rich, Rescue Squad captain Chris Manfredi and Protection Engine captain Brian Mahony. After a highly successful program at Southold schools, plans are underway to train Mattituck, Greenport and Shelter Island students as well. Congratulations to Chris, Brian and their team for a job well done. And remember, they’re always looking for more instructors to assist with CPR training.
