It’s official: Pumpkin-picking season is here!

According to traffic reports, visitors to our region are taking advantage of the beautiful weather and already enjoying time in our orchards and fields. Keep in mind that this is what some of our neighbors work for all year, so plan ahead, leave enough time to get to your destination, take a deep breath and enjoy the day!

Ghandi once said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Treat yours to the Blessing of the Animals Sunday, Oct. 4, at 1:30 p.m. on the lawn at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Mattituck. Don’t miss the Cutchogue Homemakers’ Hudson River “Spirit Cruise” on Tuesday, Oct. 6. It includes a two-hour narrated sail and luncheon on the river. Motor coach pickup spots are Cutchogue and Riverhead and the cost is $103. Call Mary Pedersen at 765-9243 for reservations.

Mark your calendars for Thursday, Oct. 29, when Our Lady of Mercy will host its popular annual fashion show at Vineyard Caterers. This event often sells out. Details will follow when tickets go on sale.

There’s no place like home. That might be what Tommy Boucher was thinking when he and girlfriend Michaela Mangas visited his parents, Anne and Tom, from California. While walking along the beach overlooking Peconic Bay, Tommy and Michaela became engaged. They are described as “a perfect match for each other” and the family looks forward happily to their wedding in California next year. God bless!

Cutchogue East Elementary School will hold back-to-school night for fifth- and sixth-graders at 7 p.m. tonight, Sept. 24. Similar evenings are set for Monday, Sept. 28: kindergarten and grade 1 from 6 to 7 p.m., and grades 2 and 3 from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m.

Mattituck High School’s Yankee Candle fundraiser continues through Oct. 9. Purchases can be made online to support specific grades. Visit mufsd.com and click the link to view all news. Twenty percent of every sale goes to MCPTSA scholarships, mini grants and toward the cost of the prom and the senior class trip.
