How much is your fire budget? Public hearings set for Tuesday

On Tuesday, fire districts within Southold Town will hold public hearings for their proposed 2016 budgets. 

Fire districts are the taxing entities that fund local fire departments, which are run mostly by volunteers, to pay for the facilities’ day-to-day operations and to purchase equipment, among other expenses.

The following is a breakdown of each budget proposal, including information about the public hearings.

Cutchogue Fire District
Proposed budget: $1,389,650
Spending increase: 2.9 percent
Tax levy increase: 1.56 percent

A public hearing to discuss the budget is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. in the fire district’s headquarters, located at 260 New Suffolk Road in Cutchogue.

A copy of the proposed budget is available at the Southold Town Clerk’s office. In addition, the fire district’s secretary has copies of the tentative spending plan available for review during office hours and a copy has been posted on the fire department’s website, cutchoguefiredept.org/content/meetings.

East Marion Fire District
Proposed budget: $599,336
Spending decrease: 1.82 percent
Tax levy increase: 0.0013 percent

A public hearing to discuss the budget is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. in the main firehouse, located at 9245 Main Road in East Marion.

A copy of the proposed budget is available at the Southold Town Clerk’s office. In addition, there are copies of the tentative spending plan available for review in the board of fire commissioners’ office by calling the fire district secretary at 631-477-0163 for an appointment.

Mattituck Fire District
Proposed budget: $1,904,854
Spending increase: 1.1 percent
Tax levy increase: 1.1 percent

A public hearing to discuss the budget is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. in the fire district’s headquarters, located at 1000 Pike St. in Mattituck.

A copy of the proposed budget is available at the Southold Town Clerk’s office. In addition, copies of the tentative spending plan are located in the fire district secretary’s office.

Orient Fire District
Proposed budget: $669,295
Spending increase: Zero percent
Tax levy increase: Zero percent

A public hearing to discuss the budget is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 6:30 p.m. in the firehouse, located at 23300 Main Road in Orient.

A copy of the proposed budget is available at the Southold Town Clerk’s office. In addition, there are copies of the tentative spending plan located in a metal receptacle mounted on the wall at the left side of the firehouse’s main entrance.

Southold Fire District
Proposed budget: $1,896,950
Spending increase: 0.9 percent
Tax levy increase: 0.9 percent

A public hearing to discuss the budget is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. in the main firehouse, located at 55135 Main Road in Southold.

A copy of the proposed budget is available at the Southold Town Clerk’s office. In addition, there are copies of the tentative spending plan located in the board of fire commissioners’ office between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The Greenport Fire Department is funded through the Village of Greenport.
