Cops: Woman faces Leandra’s Law charge after daughter injured in accident

An East Marion woman whose daughter was injured in a car accident was arrested and charged with a felony under Leandra’s Law Tuesday morning, Southold Town police said.

Officers were called to Eastern Long Island Hospital to investigate a single-car accident on Old Orchard Lane in East Marion at 7:33 a.m., according to a press release. Jessica Spence, 41, was the driver of the vehicle and her 11-year daughter suffered a head injury, police said.

An investigation revealed Ms. Spence was impaired by prescription drugs, police said. She faces an aggravated DWI charge, driving while impaired by drugs, endangering the welfare of a child and leaving the scene of an accident, police said.

Additional details about the accident were not immediately available.

Leandra’s Law makes it a felony in New York to drive drunk with a child 15 or younger.
