The N.Y. Mets are in the National League Championship Series, the Giants are, as of this writing, atop the leaderboard in the NFC East and the Countdown to Craziness for the Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team began last Saturday.

This girl is in sports heaven.

Fundraisers are coming up for two people who are Greenport born and raised. There will be a BBQ ribs and chicken dinner for MaryEllen “Buzzy” Campbell this Saturday, Oct. 24, at 711 Flint St. from noon to 6 p.m. Dinner is takeout or delivery and tickets are $20 per person. Vanessa Mims, chef extraordinaire, will be in charge of the cooking. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. To place your order, please call 477-9587 or 839-2178.

The second event is for Kenny White. Anyone with even the slightest association with Kenny knows that he and the Greenport Fire Department are synonymous. A spaghetti and meatball dinner will be held Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Third Street firehouse from 4 to 8 p.m. Eat in or take out for $15 per person. Checks can be made out to Friends of Kenny White. There will also be a chinese auction and 50/50 raffle. One of the great things about the North Fork is that we take care of our own. I hope you’ll support both these events.

Speaking of taking care of our own, I was talking the other day with Ruthie Ruffner. As you may know, she and her family were recipients of Greenport Rotary’s “Locals for Locals.” Ruthie would like to send a great big thank-you to all those who donated to Locals for Locals and especially thank the Rotary, the Hellenic, RR Building and Ratsey Construction.

The pastor and members of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church would like to offer sincere gratitude to the members of the community for supporting their annual Harvest Festival. The success of this festival is due to the generosity of all those who make donations and attend.

My sincerest sympathies go out to the Armstrong family — Heather, Paul, Clarisse, Ali and Will — on the passing of their son and brother, Paul.

The Rotary Club of Southold will be hold its annual scallop dinner at the Soundview Restaurant Tuesday, Oct. 27, from noon to 8 p.m. Non-seafood lovers may substitute a roasted half-chicken. Tickets are $25 per person (gratuity not included) and can be purchased from any Southold Rotarian or at the door. Takeout orders will be available.

Birthdays are on the way for Donna Dunne, Irma Lekkas, Charley Kozora, Sylvia Smith and Dawn Angevine Oct. 22; my cousins Beth Heaney Hamilton and Sean Heaney (south side, not Greenport) and George Cartselos on the 24th; Julie Mazzaferro, DeeDee Olstad, my aunt Helen Heaney and my cousin Robbie Stewart on the 25th; Carl Cosby, Will Cosby, Debbie Leden Lincoln and Robin Grattan on the 26th; another aunt, Vicki Heaney, Anthony Hubbard, Bobby Schroeder, Kristen Krumenacker, Shannon Welch, Angela Paladino and Christian Cusati on the 27th; Antoine Hunter and Dylan DePetro on the 28th; John Williams, Jan Damiani, Tom Welch, Nicole Ellerson and Carly and Colby Golz on the 29th; Adele Cassone on the 30th; David Urban on the 31st; Vicky Chute, Taj McKenzie and Nelson Shedrick on Nov. 1; my dear friend Sally Corwin, “Sooty” Jimenez and Sean McElroy on the 2nd; and Brian Lehmann, Sue Tyler and Chris Doucett Sr. on the 3rd.

The happiest of anniversaries is wished to Cheryl and Ron Rock, married 24 years Nov. 2, and Regina and George Cartselos, who married 14 years ago Nov. 4.
