Elle O’Neill, 7, of Peconic won first place in a Halloween costume contest at Hedgewood Farms in Laurel for her Cinderella-themed costumes.

Superman, Cinderella’s carriage, a pirate ship and more all made appearances at Hedgewood Farm in Laurel on Saturday — but not all the costume-wearers were human.

Eight children who take riding lessons at the farm dressed themselves and their horses in Halloween customes for a contest organized by Hedgewood co-owner Dawn Hommel. They also decorated jumps at the Main Road property with pumpkins and hay bales.

“I thought it would be really fun for the kids, and since [Halloween] ended up on a Saturday I was like, ‘Let’s go for it,’ ” said Ms. Hommel. “It’s a great way to start off trick-or-treating.”

Seven-year-old Elle O’Neill of Peconic took home first place honors for outfitting her pony, Pebbles — who dozed off briefly during the judging process — as Cinderella’s carriage. Elle herself dressed up as Cinderella.

“She went to Michael’s and thought about it. It was really her,” Elle’s mother said. “There were some late nights the past two nights!”

Coming in second was Anna Colosi, 7, of Southold, whose horse, Spongebob, was covered in faux cobwebs and spiders. Third place honors went to 12-year-old Kaia Rothman, a Southold resident whose pony, Just in Time, was dressed as a poodle.

“She doesn’t really care for [the costume],” Kaia said. “She deals with really anything. She’s a really good pony.”
