Deegan wins seat back on the Mattituck Parks District board

Nicholas Deegan won a seat back on the board of the Mattituck Parks District on Thursday night, defeating incumbent Russ Williamson with 63 percent of the vote.

According to Chris Elliot, assistant clerk with the district, 381 ballots were cast in total. Mr. Deegan received 243 votes while Mr. Williamson received 136.

Mr. Deegan has been on and off of the board since 2008, and lost a bid to get back on the board last year by a single vote. He said he hopes to see the public more involved in the work that the board does, would like to expand hours at the parks, and would “like to have improved transparency and efficiency.”

He said he would also like to speak with Mattituck School District about sharing resources.

The district oversees about 63 acres among its 10 parks, with Veterans Memorial Park the most visible and home of the park’s headquarters. It is home to about 4,500 residents.

Mr. Deegan will join two sitting candidates on the board who he faced off against in the past. In 2012, he defeated Commissioner Mike Ryan, and last year Gerald Goehringer beat him, 215-214.
